چکیده

there are significant challenges associated with qualitative and quantitative nucleic acid tests performed in diagnostic laboratories. the development of internationally available certified reference materials which can be traced to reference measurements will contribute to a better understanding of the performance characteristics of nucleic acid tests and enhance reliability and comparability of clinical data. next generation sequencing may have a future role in the identification and resistance detection of clinical pathogens, however, the current complexity of bioinformatics to support this technology makes its routine use in a diagnostic laboratory problematic. however, next generation sequencing is starting to impact epidemiological studies used to investigate the pathways of disease transmission in outbreaks and to determine microbial populations in metagenomics studies.

Towards Multitarget Testing in Molecular Microbiology

Advantages of PCR assays over more conventional culture-based diagnostics include significantly higher sensitivities and shorter turnaround times. They are particularly useful when patient treatment has already been initiated or for specimens that may contain microorganisms that are slow-growing, difficult to culture, or for which culture methods do not exist. However, due to genome variability...

Molecular Diagnostics in Clinical Microbiology

In the daily routine of a clinical microbiological laboratory, pathogens can be detected in several ways. Diagnostics of infectious diseases require a strategic approach, since the etiological agent can be of bacterial, viral, fungal or protozoan origin, frequently sharing an identical syndrome. A complicating factor is that the clinical sample, sent to the laboratory, can be severely contamina...
